FroFeature: Meet Tafadzwa

So on this week we are celebrating another naturalista sister who is sharing her natural hair tips and what her journey has been like… Hope you enjoy her experience, get inspired and learn from her bumpy road lols!

1.Hie Tafadzwa, please introduce yourself?

Hie l am Tafadzwa  and l have  been on my natural hair Journey for 5 years now.

2. Why are you natural and how’s been the journey?

Its actually funny how l grew to love my natural hair. If you had asked me when l was in high-school if l would ever go natural l would have said a strong NO lol but that’s because l found it extremely difficult to even manage my hair when it was in its kinky glory. My mum even tried to make me go natural a few times but failed. So how it began is when l went to Study my business degree in Malaysia. I found it difficult to find saloons that could relax my hair or even braid it properly as the people there have little experience in dealing with african hair. The one african hair saloon in my area was so expensive because they new they where in demand. I decided if l couldn’t find someone to help me relax my hair l was going to do it myself. Big mistake! I had no experience in doing my own hair so surprise surprise it started falling out, my hairline became non-existent and the hair started thinning out. So l decided to just stop using all these chemicals and just leave my hair alone. This is when it really started growing. I started watching a lot of youtube videos on how to manage my type 4C hair. That’s when l fell in love with my natural hair. I could do so much with it even a failed twist out could still look good. 5 years in and l have never looked back.

3. What’s your hair regime and staple hair product’s?

I actually don’t put a lot of complicated products my hair. Whilst binge watching natural hair videos, the one common thing these online beauty gurus kept telling me was that your hair is a living thing. This means u need to feed it for it to grow, you need to water it the same way you would water a plant. I have a spray bottle that l use to spray a little water on my hair every other day and this helps to keep in moisture so it doesn’t become dry and break off. I also try to use products that have natural and organic ingredients so that my hair stays as thick and healthy as possible. Products like raw shea butter, 100% aloe vera gel(straight from the plant), coconut oil, castor oil and olive oil. Part of being on your natural hair journey involves being a product junkie. Trying to find the right curling creams that make your curls really pop or the right gels that actually lay my edges. I have tried to tone it down a bit when l found that l was buying a whole bunch of products that l wasn’t even using.

4. Do you have any hair struggles?

The one struggle l think everyone of my natural sisters faces, is the amount of time it takes to fix your hair! It takes so much time to do even the simplest of styles for me that l have to wake up extra early to get ready for work. But the effort is very much worth it.

5. What do you use to moisturise your hair with?

Usually just a DIY aloe vera spritz. This is just a mixture of the aloe gel and water. I ended up growing an aloe vera plant in my garden when l discovered all its benefits. It does wonders to hair, skin, nails you name it.

6. What’s are your go to protective styles?

What isn’t lool, l have tried most of the styles out there. With a lot of disastrous results lol but l have come to love the twist out and wash and go the most. Simply because they are easier for me and even a failed attempt can still be rescued.

7. What are your thoughts of rocking natural hair in the workplace environment?

I am very much for rocking natural hair in the workplace. Any kind of natural hair. A lot of people used to see straight silky hair as the beauty standard but in recent years there have been lots of people coming out to express their love for curly kinky hair. Infact l remember a time l was laughed at when l was 13 for going to school in my short natural hair. But now more and more people are finding beauty in being natural.

8. You have amazing hair, any tips to someone starting out on their natural hair journey?

Thanks so much. The most important tip that helped me grow my hair to the length it is now is to hydrate hydrate hydrate! Water is very important for hair growth.

Deep Conditioning/Hair Treatments

Can you believe this post has been in my drafts for over 4 months, like what has your girl been thinking but nonetheless the post is here. So a few months back l had a series called Back2Basics where l was explaining the basics of how to care for natural hair. If you missed those posts, please check them out.. So my last post on that series was on washing your hair and cleansing your scalp. So after you are done with a co-wash or a shampoo then what?? This brings me to the next topic Hair Treatments. Hair Treatments also known as Deep Conditioning is not spoken much about, yet it is an important step in a hair regime.We have two key treatments that we all have to incorporate and both treatments are vitally important for healthy hair growth. Protein Treatment vs the Moisture Treatment. Before l explain the difference, let’s do a hair test!!

Hair Test….

There are times when you do not know which treatment your hair needs, some cases its obvious but not always. So here’s how to test which treatment your hair needs.. After you have washed your hair, take a strand of your hair and pull it

  • If hair strand quickly snaps off — Moisture Treatment (your hair is super dry)
  • If hair strand breaks after a bit of a pull —– Protein Treatment (your hair has too much moisture.

Protein Treatment

One way or another we all have suffered from excessive breakage, damaged hair, neglecting the hair, rough styling, wearing wigs/weaves, applying heat to the hair and so forth, that’s when l would suggest incorporating a Protein treatment to repair hair strands. I remember when l used to relax my hair, l would regularly have an OT (Oil treatment) and so it applies to our natural kinks. Protein treatments are temporarily known to strengthen and repair hair. So how does this happen? Well, it does this by filling in the gaps that are along the cuticle, if the protein molecules are small, it can penetrate through the hair shaft. As natties we generally need a protein treatment because our hair can easily get damaged in so many ways. So you might be wondering who needs it, well if you are like me and you stay in Harare (hot climate), we all NEED it.

The best effective type of protein treatment you want to use is the one that has the words HYDROLYZED or CAROTENE, that is hydrolyzed silk protein, hydrolysed oat protein, etc. However, ensure that the word hydrolyzed is within the first 6 ingredients mentioned, if not then it’s more of a light protein treatment. Hydrolyzed essentially means the protein whether it is plant or animal based, it has been broken down into small molecules to be able to penetrate through the hair cortex. As a side note, the treatments that we use mostly use such as avocados, mayonnaise, eggs, etc are light protein treatments. Yes these treatments make our hair feel strong but do not penetrate as much as a hydrolzed protein treatment. I would suggest to do a Protein Treatment once a month. Protein treatments have to be done in moderation as they can become heavy on our natural hair. With every protein treatment, allow the product to sit on your hair between 20mins to 2hrs and cover with a plastic cap. Below are two budget friendly recipes for a light protein treatment that is easy to do:

Avocado and Olive Oil Deep Conditioning

The natural foods and products that favour hair growth are those that have vitamins and nutrients that hydrate them deeply and act by regenerating all the damaged parts of the hair. In this sense, the avocado is an ideal fruit to make hair grow strong and healthy. It is very rich in vitamins A, B, C and E, water and vegetable oils. This combination of water and vegetable oils makes it perfect to soften, restore, nourish and strengthen hair. This strengthens the hair follicles and therefore helps the hair to grow faster and healthier.It is an excellent natural remedy for dry thirsty hair and in need of moisture. This hair mask is able to fight split ends, so the hair will not split so easily and you can gain a few extra inches in less time. This mask regulates hair growth and reduces hair loss.

Ingredients:

ripe avocado
1 egg
2 tablespoons of olive oil
Preparation
Mix all the ingredients to form a consistent paste.
Apply on your hair from the root to the tips, cover with a plastic bag and leave on for 45 minutes.
Rinse with  water.

Egg is a food rich in proteins that act on the hair follicle strengthening it. This is great if lately you have seen that your hair falls out more than necessary. Egg is one of the foods that has a high percentage of proteins that is not only recommended to be present in the daily diet, but also it must be applied directly to the hair through a homemade mask. To make a natural treatment for better hair health you have to use the following ingredients: two egg yolks and two tablespoons of olive oil.
Egg-based hair masks will make your hair thicker . This is a mixed hair mask which means that in dry hair it works as a moisturiser while balancing oily hair.

Preparation:

Beat the ingredients well.  Apply to washed hair, gently massaging throughout the hair and scalp, cover the hair with a plastic bag, leave on for at least 20 minutes and finally rinse with plenty of water cold. Please do not use hot water or lukewarm water as you do not want to fry the egg in the hair because it will not be an experience you will enjoy (Trust me on this).

Key notes to remember for a protein treatment:

  • Excessive breakage or heat damaged
  • Ensure it’s a hydrolysed protein for maximum benefit
  • Should be done, one a month

 

Moisture Treatment

Well simply put, this treatment is critically important when you are suffering from extensive hair dryness. Yes our hair needs moisture to flourish but just daily spritzing might not do the trick. l know there’s a group of my are fellow ladies who have “hard mashona/mufushwa” (extreme dry and tangled) hair where incorporating moisture treatments would be ideal for your hair. Moisture is literally bomb to our hair. Below are two recipes to start with:

Coconut Oil and Honey

Well honey is one of my favourite natural moisturisers for my hair and face. It has been wowed by people with its amazing properties and numerous benefits for natural hair.It is a natural humectant, which means it absorbs moisture from the surroundings and is also a natural hair conditioner that will soften hair. No wonder why most moisturising products honey- honey is golden. Hair masks containing honey that have been blended with healthy penetrative oils work wonders in repairing damaged and rejuvenating hair follicles. In this scalp nourishing hair mask, we’re going to be using coconut oil and honey! Coconut oil unblocks clogged hair follicles and strengthens them, and also helps get rid of bacteria and stale oils that block the follicles. Honey, on the other hand, works by nourishing dry follicles that are prone to falling off. Together both ingredients will help alleviate dandruff and itchy scalp issues, ultimately promoting growth.Always remember to use pure honey and organic pure virgin coconut oil as the processed ones usually contains additives that may adversely affect your hair for example: dry out your strands or make them look greasy.

Preparation:

Just mix the two ingredients in a bowl, apply to damp or wet hair focusing on the ends of the hair as well. When the entire head is applied, wear a plastic cap for 20 – 40mins and rinse off. If you don’t have coconut oil you can use olive oil.

Castor Oil and Shea butter

This is definitely a double whammy combo.. Any mixture with shea-butter will leave your hair with so much life. Make sure you blend your shea-butter then add your castor to mix the two. Follow the same procedure as above as you apply to your hair.

If you’re feeling extra you can just mix both recipes and you will definitely get a more richer moisture treatment but that all depends with your budget and what you can afford.

In conclusion, both treatments are a must for our hair to grow in a healthy manner. As a side note, when preparing your hair for a protective style, ensure that you either do one of the treatments to create a good foundation before your protective style.

So your hair is breaking???

There’s always an issue when it comes to natural hair and breakage as to why/how it breaks so much and in lumps and it’s a nightmare. Trust me, l have been there but l am getting less breakage and it’s an achievement “öoh yaasss”! So on today’s post l am just sharing a few causes and as well as tips that can help you to minimise hair breakage. Well just a simple analogy, if your hair is breaking simply put its not growing. Hair breaks due to a number of factors so for your hair to flourish you have to take extra care. I sure do hope you learn something. It’s the small little things that actually make such a huge difference.

So l will start with my favourite tip – Deep conditioning, this is a MUST in any hair care regime especially when you are looking to grow healthy hair. Deep conditioning is that solid foundation you just need to incorporate in your hair journey. DC helps to soften the hair and allows the hair to be manipulated thereafter, like mai mwana (lady) what are you doing if you don’t deep condition. When you shampoo, you are cleansing your scalp, whereas DC helps to restore your hair’s protein or moisture to give it strength and allow it to flourish. Deep conditioning is that step in the regime that helps to make the hair manageable. It creates the balance between protein and moisture. Please do not skip deep conditioning.

My next tip thirsty hair. Well l know ladies who wash their hair once in every two months “naah honey”. Prolonged intervals of not washing hair, does cause breakage cause your hair just becomes so dry, soo brittle and it just falls off. I try to wash my hair twice a month or once a month and l always rock protective styles that allow me to wash my hair because now l enjoy my wash day. Water and my hair same whatsapp group, that level of hydration is key.

Then we have the issue of protective styling with extensions i.e wigs, braids, weaves, faux locs etc. For this one, l am sure there are too many culprits lols that is, ladies who rock these styles and just don’t care for their hair. Well hunnies l have news for you, when your hair is in that situation, it needs extra care and you need to make sure that your hair thrives. Forgetting about your hair means matting which leads to tangles and knots and once your hair has too many knots, it will break. Protective styling does help in length retention but what good is it to retain length and during take down your hair is breaking such a setback. Lastly just don’t keep in the protective style for too long, 6- 8weeks is a good time.

My next tip, please allow your hair to breathe! Not allowing your hair to breathe has its own consequences. I used to be a culprit of this one, way way way back when l just used to interchange styles thinking I’m being fancy not knowing that l am setting myself for breakage. Áfter a protective style your hair just needs time to recover and for every take-down just have time with your hair for at least a month or more.

Moisturising – it’s important to moisturise your hair daily or after every two days with a spritz of your choice that’s water and a sealing oil. You can check out my post where l explained how to moisturise.

Keep your hands off the blow-dryer. Blow drying has being a thing for so many years after a wash day or just before a protective style but that kind of heat is your enemy. Prolonged use of blow drying will cause heat damage and also cause thinning of strands. A better option to stretch out your hair is to air dry or plait mabhanzi known as African threading.

Detangling, this is definitely dreaded by most of us but it has to be done. Natural hair tends to tangle and create knots, so how you detangle is vitally important. It’s advisable to detangle your hair when it is still damp because it’s easier to manage. For tighter knots, you can use an oil to loosen up the hair. Just a side-note if your hair has too many knots and frizz it’s time to trim.

My last tip, tools we use for the hair, especially combs. The simple wide tooth comb and your fingers are great combing tools. There’s a wide variety of combs on the market to choose from but most of them do cause harm to the hair.

Turning My Flop Style Into A Simple Casual Style

As promised, this is just a short post based on how l then decided to rock my hair when my bantu knots failed to cooperate with me lol. Just a bit of FYI, l am becoming Madam flat-twists, since l realised l can’t cornrow. Flat-twists are much easier to learn and l am still learning them. When l style my hair l am more drawn to styles that look stylish and do not put too much tension on my edges. The beauty about this style is either you can rock it in a low puff, high puff or leave your hair to freely flow like yours truly. So here’s how l styled my hair  based on my previous post Failed Bantu Knot  (I promise, this style will take you less than 10 minutes)!

STEP ONE: START ON DRY HAIR

The key to quick hairstyles is starting with dry hair. This style also works on old dry hair – twistout, braidout, a fro, you name it, it doesn’t matter! If your scalp is dry, just apply an oil to refresh your scalp. If your hair is dry, spruce it up with some moisture – either shea-butter, a leave-in conditioner or water with a sealing oil.

STEP TWO: SECTION YOUR HAIR

Take a comb of your choice or if you like me just DIY with your fingers. Create a part going down the middle of your scalp to the mid- section of your head and then make a part from ear to ear about one inch from your hairline. You should end up with four parts.

Flat twist down on one side of your part until you reach the front of your head, then continue with the twist along the section on the front of your hairline. Continue with your flat twists all the way down. Repeat the same process for the other side. If you’re feeling fancy, you can accessorize by adding hair clips/beads. Lastly you can just fluff out your hair with a wide tooth comb or make a high puff. Done!

Failed Bantu-Knot

Truth be told, Bantu knots are hands down my favorite way to style my hair. It gives good definition, a great volume, a nice rounded shape (which l absolutely love) and l don’t use too many products and still achieve the look. As for twist outs l love them on other people and l end there lols. Well honestly, I often don’t like the shape it gives to my hair and the lack of volume they give. And though braid outs tend to give me great volume, they also lose their shape really quickly and become a fro by the next day. With that being said, this past weekend l decided to revert to my all time favourite style – bantu knots. I honestly have never had a challenge with getting my curls popping but boy, oh boy this time it was a hot-mess lols. So lets dive into the process of how to do the bantu-knots.

  1. On dry hair, I sprayed water and added my moisturising olive oil all over my hair
  2. Then l sectioned my hair, the process is pretty simple – just do a two-strand twist and make a knot “viola”
  3. I made about 14 bantu knots around my head and allowed my hair to dry overnight
  4. The next morning, I used my castor oil mix to unravel my twist which helps to minimize frizz during the takedown. (Some knots were still damp but your girl kept untwisting)
The end-result

When doing bantu knots on dry hair, it’s important to use products that are moisturizing and to have a good twisting technique to achieve the moveable curls we all desire. I am still to try my bantu-knot with a curling cream cause l haven’t done it before so yeah! So below l jotted down where l possibly went wrong with my knot out.

MY MISTAKES

  •  Taking down my knot whilst still damp, well my hair has grown longer so the air-drying process is definitely longer. With any protective style, allow your hair to fully dry (preferably a full day, depending on the dense and length of your hair) for much longer lasting defined curls
  • There’s a huge possibility that my twists were too big (well you never know), so next time, l should try to reduce the size.

Well natties we all have bad hair days, but l managed to make the most with what l had. I just rocked my wavy/curls trying to pop look and for more volume l just used a wide-tooth comb. For my next post l write about how l then created a simple casual look with my wavy hair. Don’t let your hair determine your mood, at first l was face down but then l realised, girl just make this hair work and so l did.
